Ed at the 50th Anniversary of The Preservation Hall Jazz Band

Ed, Ian, and Jake met at Oberlin College, where they formed the traditional bluegrass band, Weedkiller. Years later, they regrouped in New York as the Lonesome Trio, performing their own songs and favorite covers at New York venues such as the Rockwood Music Hall, Bowery Ballroom, Irving Plaza, and the Parkside Lounge, where they hosted a popular holiday show between 2005 and 2009. Ed’s move to LA caused a temporary slowdown, but these days the guys manage to get together frequently, playing a few gigs a year in New York and Los Angeles or just pickin’ at random hotels, living rooms, and ancient temples around the world.

All Gone To Hell // Lonesome Trio

Song #003:

We’re All In This Together // Old Crow Medicine Show

I first heard this song at the very first Ed Helms show I went to about two years ago. Willie Watson and Ed Helms came out to the stage and started to sing this. I’m pretty sure it was the exact moment I fell in love with Ed Helms and bluegrass. Every time I hear it, I go back to the night when we first met.

Song #002:

Rye Whiskey // Punch Brothers

Rye whiskey makes your heart beat louder,
makes your voice seem softer, makes the back room hotter, oh, boy.

“Take the song “Rye Whiskey” off the new album Antifogmatic: It’s simply awesome—fun and uplifting, even witty—but it’s actually a mind-control weapon.”-Ed Helms

Song #001:

Paranoia in B-flat Major// The Avett Brothers

“Will you love me still, when we awake and you find that the sanity has gone from my eyes?”

I got introduced to The Avett Brothers because of Ed, I heard him mention that he really liked them. They’re a bit bluegrassy with a hint of indie rock, just a really lovely combination. This song just sort of has a mix of everything, I could see this being somewhere in his itunes library.
